PROBUS Outdoors Club – Calhoun’s

Barb is looking at the weather forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. If the roads are unsafe to drive she will send out an email possibly even very early Thursday a.m.

This week we will be going to hike on some private trails near Samuel de Champlain Prov Park. It’s called the Top of Algonquin B&B, which is owned and operated by Rick Calhoun, a retired forester, and his wife. It is our destination for access to their private trails. Rick will be our guide and have a campfire for us after the hike. Bring your lunch. I will have my pie irons with me if anyone wishes to grill their sandwich over the open fire. There are washrooms, (always a plus)

The trails:
Rick tells me the trails are quite flat, and sent me this description…
There are two ways to get to the main trail section – both involve going down hills – one way is a longer and fairly gentle and one quite a bit steeper and also fairly long (I think it’s 300 paces but may only be 200). After that, trails are flat to mildly- very mildly, rolling. There is one narrow stream we have to cross over. One simply steps over this small steam. There may be two wet areas to cross over, hopefully both remain frozen. There are also trails at the front with a walk over to see the horses (not to be missed!)

Time on the trails could be 90 min. walk / hike. We may be faster than Rick’s estimate though.

Car pool:
I am suggesting those who wish to carpool meet at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot of Northgate Mall near the entrance to Urban Planet. I am aware it’s early, but according to Google it is a 40 minute drive and it will take us a few minutes to organize the car pooling. Don’t look for our blue Jeep. We will have my SUV and can take three other people. I know others will offer spare space in their vehicles too.

For those of you who live out in the Corbeil area and wish to carpool either, arrange that on your own and let me know, or we could arrange a meeting spot at MacEwen Gas station at the intersection of #17 and #94

Email Barb Wednesday, February 28th to confirm your attendance. When you confirm your attendance please share with me if you would like to carpool or if you are just going to drive yourself and meet us there. Hiking poles/ urban walking poles are advised on all hikes. Wearing ice grips on our boots is also recommended this winter. Don’t forget to bring your lunch with your lawn chair etc. Please tell me if you plan to car pool or drive yourself. 😊
